Rice Export to Sweden from India

Kumud Group has been milling and exporting rice from India since 1994, and Sweden is one of the newer markets we are building supply relationships in as part of our export network across 30+ countries in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Our rice is grown and processed at our two mills in Sandi Chungi, Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, and Village Nariana, Taraori, Karnal, Haryana, both located in India’s GI-certified Basmati rice belt.

Sweden’s food import market runs on strict EU food safety law layered with national oversight from Livsmedelsverket (the Swedish Food Agency), and buyers here expect full documentation before the first container is even booked. This page covers what an importer in Sweden needs to know about sourcing basmati and non-basmati rice from us, the compliance side, the varieties in demand, and how packaging and shipping work for this route.

EU and Swedish Food Safety Oversight

Sweden is an EU member state, so rice imports fall under the EU’s General Food Law along with harmonised EU rules on hygiene, additives, and contaminants. Livsmedelsverket is the central authority for food matters in Sweden, though the Swedish Board of Agriculture is also involved at the border for certain checks. In practice, the two things EU buyers scrutinise most closely on rice shipments are pesticide residue levels (maximum residue limits, or MRLs) and mycotoxin levels, since both are checked routinely and repeated non-compliance can lead to increased inspection frequency for a supplier or origin country.

Labelling for the Swedish Market

Under EU food information rules, pre-packed rice sold in Sweden needs the ingredient list, allergen information, net quantity, best-before date, batch code, and importer’s name and address on the label, and this information has to appear in Swedish. For private label orders, Kumud Group can print to a buyer’s own artwork and packaging specifications, but the buyer or their local partner needs to confirm the final Swedish-language label text before printing.

KUMUD XXXL 1121 Basmati Rice PLATINUM

Pesticide Residue Free Rice

Given how closely EU buyers and Livsmedelsverket monitor pesticide residue levels, our Pesticide Residue Free rice line is worth highlighting separately for Swedish importers who supply retail chains or health-focused stores with stricter internal sourcing standards than the standard EU MRL requirement.

Note: Non basmati rice from our range, including Sona Masoori, Sharbati, PR11, PR14, Kolam, Idli, Matta, Black and Parmal can also be supplied to Saudi Arabia on request.

Packaging and Shipping for Sweden Orders

Packaging Options

We pack from 500g retail pouches up to 50kg bulk bags, and packaging is built around what the buyer needs rather than a fixed format. Private label packaging is available for importers who want to sell under their own brand in the Swedish market, and we’ve supported this kind of custom packaging for many of our 970+ clients across our export markets.

Shipping and Port of Entry

Most containerised imports into Sweden move through the Port of Gothenburg, which handles roughly half of the country’s total container trade and also connects onward to other Nordic markets by rail and road. The exact port of loading on the India side (commonly Kandla, Mundra, or Nhava Sheva for rice shipments from northern India) has not been confirmed yet for this route and should be finalised with the client based on the buyer’s preferred shipping line and transit time.
