Rice Export to Portugal from India

Portugal eats more rice than any other country in Europe. On average, Portuguese households consume around 15 to 16 kg of rice per person every year, close to four times the EU average. Local production of Carolino and Agulha rice, grown along the Tejo, Mondego, and Sado river basins, covers a little over half of this demand. The rest is imported, which is why Portuguese mills, wholesalers, and food companies bring in rice every year to fill the gap and to serve categories that domestic rice does not cover well, such as Basmati and other long grain speciality rice.

Kumud Group has been growing, processing, and exporting rice from India since 1994. We run two mills, one in Sandi Chungi, Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, and one in Village Nariana, Taraori, Karnal, Haryana, which sits in India’s GI-certified basmati belt. We currently export to more than 30 countries across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Our range covers Basmati (1121, 1401, 1509, 1718, Pusa, Traditional) and Non-Basmati (PR11, PR14, Parmal, Sharbati, Sona Masoori, Ponni, Matta, Idli, Kolam, Black Rice), along with Pesticide Residue Free rice, built for buyers who need consistent quality at container volumes. For Portuguese importers, wholesalers, and food processors, we also offer custom private label packaging to match retail and foodservice requirements.

Compliance and Import Regulations for Rice Exports to Portugal

As an EU member state, Portugal applies the bloc’s common customs and food safety rules on top of a few national procedures. Every container of rice we ship to a Portuguese buyer moves through this framework.

Food Safety, Contaminants, and Labeling

  • Rice sold in the EU must stay within the maximum levels set for inorganic arsenic under EU contaminant rules, along with standard EU pesticide residue limits.
  • Packaging and labeling must follow the EU Food Information to Consumers Regulation, covering ingredient declaration, net weight, batch code, and country of origin.
  • Kumud Group is Halal certified and holds international food safety certification.

Packaging and Shipping to Portugal

Packaging Options

We pack rice for Portugal in sizes from 500g consumer pouches up to 50kg bulk bags, and the format is chosen based on whether the buyer is supplying retail shelves, foodservice kitchens, or bulk distribution. Custom private label packaging is available for buyers who want their own branding, something we’ve now done for over 970 clients across our export markets.

Shipping and Logistics

Minimum order quantity starts at 20 to 21 metric tonnes, which is a standard container load. Shipments move by sea from Indian ports to Portuguese entry points such as Lisbon, Sines or Leixões. Exact transit time depends on the shipping line and routing, so we share a firm schedule once the order and port of discharge are confirmed. FOB and CIF terms can both be arranged depending on what works for the buyer’s logistics setup.
