Rice Export to France from India

Kumud Group has been milling and exporting rice since 1994, from two mills located in Sandi Chungi, Hardoi (Uttar Pradesh) and Village Nariana, Taraori, Karnal (Haryana), part of India’s GI-certified basmati belt. Today the company supplies buyers in more than 30 countries across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. France is part of that European reach, and this page covers what French importers, wholesalers, and retailers need to know before placing an order, from compliance rules to packaging and shipping.

Rice Import Regulations and Compliance for France

France follows the European Union’s single food safety framework, so any rice entering the country, whether it lands at a French port or arrives through another EU member state, must meet EU-wide rules before it meets rules specific to France.

Pesticide Residue Limits and Food Safety Checks

The EU sets some of the strictest Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for pesticides in the world, and rice is checked closely. One example that has directly affected basmati trade is tricyclazole, a fungicide commonly used in rice cultivation: the EU cut its permitted limit from 1 mg/kg to 0.01 mg/kg. Shipments are subject to random sampling and laboratory testing at the point of entry, and consignments that exceed the limits can be rejected or destroyed. Because of this, Kumud Group tests its export lots before shipment rather than relying on inspection at the destination port to catch problems.

Packaging and Shipping Information

Packaging Options

Kumud Group packs rice from 500g retail bags up to 50kg sacks, with the format chosen based on the buyer’s channel:

  • Retail-size bags for supermarkets and grocery chains, where private label (“marque distributeur”) packaging is common; France has one of the highest shares of private label products on supermarket shelves in Europe, and Kumud Group’s custom private label service is built for exactly this kind of order.
  • Bulk bags for wholesalers, foodservice, and catering suppliers

Shipping and Minimum Order Quantity

Orders are handled on a container-load basis, with a minimum order quantity of 20-21 MT. Rice shipped from India to France typically moves through the Suez Canal route, arriving at either Marseille-Fos on the Mediterranean coast or Le Havre, France’s largest container port on the Atlantic side. Sea transit generally takes around 3-4 weeks, though actual timing depends on vessel schedules and any transshipment involved.
